Fresh Flowers and Mother’s Day

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE?Sunday was Mother’s Day and as usual the grocery stores were practically choking on all of the fresh flower arrangements they had crammed into the first few aisles of the store.

I love fresh flowers, but I never liked spending money on them because they are the ultimate sunk cost. They are expensive, they serve only to make your home more beautiful, and then they DIE! They aren’t even like a live plant, which stays beautiful for a long period of time, often flowers only last 7 days or so.

That said, if you’ve been following my Instagram feed lately, you know that I’ve taken to buying flowers once in awhile, usually when they are on sale and will only set me back the cost of a beer. That’s because I’m finally getting to the point where I feel comfortable loosening the purse strings and spending a little bit of money on myself. Not a lot, but $8 every few weeks is ok.

The same goes with spending money on things like Mother’s Day. I love my Mom very much, but in years past, when it came time to spend money on Mother’s Day, I would get anxiety over it. When I was in debt repayment mode, I’d be really squeezed for cash. At that time, spending even a small amount of money on non-essentials seemed like a huge extravagance.

This year was the first time in several years that I was able to splurge and get my mother a bouquet of flowers and a card without even thinking about the cost. I’m so happy that I’ve finally gotten to this point in my spending habits, all of those years of hard work have really paid off.

What are some of the little things you never splurged on while in debt, but can afford to now?
